CE Credits: 1.7

This module lays out the varied components of a weight loss plan for obese patients, starting with a nutrition and exercise program that is both enjoyable and sustainable. The module also covers possible pharmaceutical treatments for obesity (appropriate for certain patients) and the variety of over-the-counter and herbal supplements, and explains why many of them should be discouraged. The module also describes some complementary and alternative medicines—such as yoga and meditation—which may contribute to a healthier lifestyle. Finally, the module covers the guidelines for different kinds of bariatric surgery, and under what circumstances Medicare covers such surgery.

Learning objectives: After completing this module the case manager will be able to:
» Identify nutritional recommendations
» Discuss physical activity recommendations
» Describe pharmaceutical regimens
» Discuss complementary and alternative medicine
» Review surgical interventions

Advance your professional practice:: As case managers, we need a thorough knowledge of the various medical treatments for obesity, so that we can help patients find the most appropriate path for them to take. By counseling patients on the specifics of different options— from the side effects of different weight loss medications to the pros and cons of bariatric surgery—we can support patients in a weight-loss regimen.

Improve organizational performance: The costs of obesity can be high for patients and healthcare organizations, due to the high risk of chronic or acute complications. When our team of professionals understands and can give consistent advice on the most effective treatments for obesity, we can reduce the risks of complications and hospitalizations due to obesity.
