Behavioral Health: Anxiety Disorders
While general medical and psychiatric evaluation results, along with diagnostic studies and lab test results are conducted and lead to a treatment plan, adequate attention should also be given to our patient’s psychosocial issues. Crucial treatment plans not only address the comorbid conditions that may be present, but also must be understood by family members and significant others. In some cases, they may accuse your patient of overacting or malingering. Supportive therapy will help to keep everyone on the same page.

Cardiovascular Risk: Heart Disease
Key points to remember when educating and collaborating with your patients includes: heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S. and the estimated costs of heart disease is $142.5 BILLION (as of 2006). Ninety percent of patients with CHD had exposure to at least one risk factor. The highest death rates are located primarily in Appalachia; the SE coastal plains; the southern regions of GA and AL, and along the lower Mississippi River Valley.

CM – Pause for a moment
Stressed? Got a minute? Put your hand under your navel and feel your gentle rise and fall of breathing. Breathe in slowly through your nose…pause…count to three and breathe out slowly through your pursed lips. Pause and count to 3. Repeat deep breathing for one minute. The pause that refreshes. …haa….

National Cholesterol Education Month
In the Headlines . . .
“September is National Cholesterol Education Month”
As we all see and hear ample advertisements and promotions of treatment options for elevated cholesterol levels, we can understand why there is a push to lower one of the major risk factors for heart disease in the U.S. While medications may be one means to lower the level, there are lifestyle changes and activities that have been recommended by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) to help our patients as well as ourselves in striving for wellness. Do you know your lipoprotein profile levels?
