COPD: Precautions with Methylxanthine
Strong warnings have been identified for this category of medicine. Avoidance is necessary if your patient has a seizure disorder, congestive heart failure, liver disease and/or renal failure. If the medicine is used, remember that Methylxanthines irrigate the GI tract and stimulate the central nervous system. The risk of toxicity is still possible if drug clearance is reduced or interrupted.

Diabetes: Macrovascular Disease
Patients with diabetes develop cardiovascular disease earlier in their lives than those who do not have the disease. Peripheral vascular disease is common in persons with long standing diabetes, resulting in claudication, ulcers, and amputations. The percentage of all nontraumatic lower-extremity amputations in the U.S. is fifty percent (50%) and is primarily due to peripheral neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease.

CM –Tame your Stress
Got 3 minutes? I know…no time…have too much on my mind and schedule, but this is worth the three minutes…really! Sit down and check your body for tension – drop your shoulders first. Relax your facial muscles by dropping your jaw slightly. Dropping your shoulders with your arms falling at your sides helps to loosen the tension in your spine/neck. Loosen your hands – separate fingers; uncross your legs and melt into the chair. Take a deep long breath through your nose and blow out slowly through your mouth. Try it again. Aahh…the pause that refreshes!

“CMSA Members Are Signing Up for a New Software Solution…”
A new care management user-friendly software system has been launched by The Case Management Society of America and TCS Healthcare Technologies this month, called ACUITY AnyWare. The web-enabled application tracks and supports case and disease management programs and is the first software that has embedded the Case Management Adherence Guidelines (CMAGs) as an integrated tool. An online demonstration and further information is available at the CMSA website.

“Hurricanes…Plus Cyclones, Typhoons, & Other Tropical Storms”
With our recent hurricanes and tornadoes, an increased risk for illnesses and injuries, have brought to everyone’s attention the dangers that come along with these monstrous storms. The CDC continues to work with our states and local governments as well as with DHHS, FEMA and other federal agencies, to assure recovery and safety are accounted for and working. This preparedness and response also includes you and me, with protecting ourselves and others from immediate and future dangers. Check out the CDC’s website for specifics on what you and I can do to stay safe and help each other out in our communities and our country. Thank you.
