Asthma: Meds & Elderly
Did you know that underutilization of corticosteroids in the elderly is considered to be a significant factor in fatal or near-fatal exacerbations of asthma? The metabolic clearance of prednisolone is slower in elderly populations and results in a higher concentration of total and free prednisolone, but there is no data that indicates the elderly have an inherently increased risk of side effects from corticosteroids. Diseases and conditions that are common in our aging population may complicate any increases in frequency and severity of side effects associated with the use of oral corticosteroids.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Cardiac Complications
Approximately 40% of people with rheumatoid arthritis die of heart-related disease, but at a much younger average age than the general population. Premature atherosclerosis, dilated cardiomyopathy and valvular nodules are three of the specific cardiac manifestations of RA. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for their survival and includes pharmaceutical and surgical interventions based on their specific complication.
