Behavioral Health: CM’s Role
In managing depression, the case manager’s role can be identified in a number of different instances. Emergency room encounters or medical admissions for behavioral health issues like eating disorders can prompt a referral to case management. Other referrals identified for case managers are disabilities claims, co-morbid conditions and medications (high costs, wide variety, and types). Of course direct referrals for case management are always a possibility for case managers.

COPD: Advocacy
Managing acute exacerbations requires the knowledge to know and understand when to call the physician and when to seek emergency help. The difference between feeling weak or having chest pain will bring about the best treatment if the guidelines are provided. Talking with your patient while reviewing this information will help to discern what situations are appropriate for the physician and when going to the emergency room is necessary.

The S’s have it…
Salmon
, spinach and sweet potatoes provide a rich assortment of healthy nutrients besides being easy to eat. Salmon is an excellent source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids [type of fat that makes your blood less likely to form clots]. Omega-3s may also protect against irregular heartbeats, decrease growth of artery-clogging plaques, and lower blood pressure. This fish is a good source of protein and is low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Baked…broiled…with a little lemon…yum!

“Wound Devices draw FDA Notice”
While the negative pressure wound therapy devices have helped to heal and close wounds since they were first introduced years ago, recent reportable deaths and injuries in the last two years from these devices has prompted the FDA to issue reports on their use and adverse events. Complications, especially bleeding and infection have occurred with patients in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and at home. Focused recommendations from the Food and Drug Administration are available on their Consumer Updates website as well. Check it out today before one of your patients has an order or is receiving this service.
