Diabetes: Prevention
Better access to medical care, proper education and effective communication with a health care provider during an illness can prevent diabetes Ketoacidosis (DKA). Talking with your patient, key ‘sick-day’ management of their diabetes is always a good thing. Areas to cover include: 1) when to contact the health care provider, 2) blood glucose goals – use of supplemental short-acting insulin during illnesses, 3) means to suppress fever and treat infections, and 4) initiation of an easily digestible liquid diet (CHO and salt)

Cardiovascular Risk: Circulation
Arterial, venous, capillary and pulmonary subsystems comprise the entire blood circulatory system. Each provides specific functions that enable to system to function correctly. For instance: the pulmonary circulation includes the movement of venous blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs and the arterial blood from the lungs back to the left side of the heart (left atrium). This includes capillary circulation where O2 that is inhaled into the lungs moves into blood in the many capillaries in the lungs.

In the Headlines . . .
“Travelers Health”
Even though traveling may not be on everyone’s mind, there should be some thought towards pre-planning for a spring break or even a summer vacation. While stepped up security is in force to keep travelers safe, there are other considerations that need to be identified and included in the plans. The CDC has a webpage devoted to travelers and includes a Yellow Book, Destinations, Travel Notices and tips for traveling in the flu season (H1N1). Keep the website in your favorites and reference it intermittently for you and your patient’s safety and peace of mind.
