Asthma: Symptoms It is no surprise to anyone with allergies that 2010 has been a true test of staying on top of one’s symptoms. People with Asthma face that challenge and more. The numbers of people with Asthma continue to climb, the CDC estimates 23 M people and accounts for close to 2M emergency room visits per year (ref: Environmental Protection Agency).

CV Risk: Red Wine and a Health Heart Can you enjoy a glass a red wine at that spring dinner? Studies have shown that selecting wine may reflect other health lifestyle choices, and it may have a positive connection to overall heart health. In addition, it is now thought that red wine may increase one’s HDLs – the good cholesterol. This does not give a green light to heavy drinking, nor is it intended to encourage alcohol consumption. The American Heart Assn. cautions that alcohol abuse may lead to a variety of health risks.

Asthma and COPD Inhalers That Contain Ozone-depleting CFCs to be Phased Out; Alternative Treatments Available

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced (in April) that, in accordance with longstanding U.S. obligations under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, seven metered-dose inhalers (MDI) used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) will be gradually removed from the U.S. marketplace. These inhalers contain ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which are propellants that move medication out of the inhaler and into the lungs of patients. Alternative medications that do not contain CFCs are available. For details please go to www.fda.gov and look for News Release April 13, 2010.
