Women's Health How do you respond? What to tell patients that ask questions? As both an individual, and as a Case Manager, we may need to deal with the inevitable question about use of Hormone Replacement Therapy. Certainly there have been many legitimate concerns as a result of varied clinical studies as to safety of using hormone replacement at the time of menopause.
The North American Menopause Society issues a 2010 Position Statement stating that the “benefit risk ratio is favorable” for use of HRT when initiated close to the time of menopause. HRT helps women with prevention of fractures; addresses urinary changes; and other physical changes that occur in connection to menopause.
Athena Forum: Women’s Health Module A, Section 2 provides additional information on hormonal replacement.

COPD Treatment Studies
The Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality recently released a report on two separate studies on patient treatments for COPD. Both studies, conducted by the Univ of Illinois, are a part of the AHRQ’s Developing Evidence of Inform Decisions about Effectiveness (DEcIDE) Program that focused on identified safety and effectiveness of specific combination of drugs. For a detailed review of the surprising results, go to: www.effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov/index.cfm/search-for-guides-reviews-and-reports/
