Smoking – COPD There was a recent article about the amount of smoking still seen in movies targeted at teens and young adults and we watch TV shows of the 50s and 60s when everyone seemed to smoke. In treating people with COPD, most likely there is a connection to that person having smoked, or still smoking. A constant health risk to all, however even greater risks for those with lung disease. Module B of Athena Forum’s course on COPD discusses this topic, and the positive impact of counseling your patients: Counseling sessions between 3 and 10 minutes results in a 12% quit rate. Rheumatoid Arthritis and joint pain, fatigue, depression Early diagnosis and early treatment has been shown to improve function and prevent some complications for persons with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Know the symptoms to help in your assessments of patients who may need additional tests and appropriate referrals when RA is suspected. Please visits Athena Forum’s course on RA, Module A, Chapter 4 for a review. Athena Forum: RA, Module A - Chapter 4

Mom was right – raw cookie dough is NOT okay to eat

This week that have been reports of a salmonella outbreak and warnings on particular egg brands (go to either the FDA or CDC websites for current information). Being aware of food safety at all times is important not only to us individually, but we need to consider our patients and reinforcing the importance of proper food preparation. People with immune deficiencies; the elderly and infants are at the highest risk of food borne illness.
In the Headlines . . .
This summer, as we prepare for those remaining outdoor activities and picnics remember to follow some basic food safety guide for eggs, as identified by the CDC:

  • Keep eggs refrigerated at all times

  • Cook eggs so that both the yellow AND the white are thoroughly cooked

  • Do not eat raw eggs or foods made (and served) such as some salad dressings and sauces – be sure to ask when eating out

  • Keep food preparation surfaces clean

  • Wash your hands when preparing foods and after contact with raw eggs.

  • Do not use eggs that are cracked or dirty in the carton - discard
