Pain – we all have experienced pain – how do we help our patients? In order for people to find pain relief, first the cause and type of pain needs to be identified. Helping patients best identify their pain in assessment phase is a crucial step. Regardless if the pain is acute or chronic in nature, pain management is best achieved with all information possible. Part of patient education for those with pain is to provide useful tools for identifying the type, site, intensity and length of pain.

I invite you to review Athena Forum’s Pain Management course, module A, Chapter 3 for information on Pain Assessments.

Wait a minute – it’s still summer – right??
Technically it is still summer, however in many communities the familiar yellow school buses have begun to pick up children along their routes and school has begun.

The other now familiar ‘sign’ that fall is approaching is a true sign in windows and doors of our pharmacies to remind us to get our flu shots. The FDA is recommending one flu vaccine this year as it contains protection against three strains of influenza (see www.fda.gov for details).

Please check with your insurance provider about coverage, as many payers are now either reimbursing, and/or referring to contracted providers to assist their members in being vaccinated. Those on Medicare should not have a co-pay.
In the Headlines . . .
It is still important to remember and use the safe practices of washing hands and covering your mouth when coughing.
