Asthma Hospitalizations preventable

Under treatment and inappropriate therapy are major contributors to asthma morbidity and mortality in the United States. Hospitalizations due to asthma, however, are preventable or avoidable when patients receive appropriate asthma care. Studies from two metropolitan areas found that less than half of the patients studied were receiving anti-inflammatory therapy as recommended in guidelines published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) in its 1997 Expert Panel Report.

COPD: Management

Management of COPD is largely driven by patient symptoms. A patient's decision to seek medical care is usually determined by the impact symptoms have on their lifestyle. Unfortunately, there is not a clear, direct relationship between symptoms and airflow limitation. Therefore, the staging system is indicated for general educational use and a guide to management rather than a definitive rule for therapy.

FDA Warns Against Injection Dolasetron Due to Risk for Heart Arrhythmias

Dolasetron mesylate (Anzemet; Aventis Pharmaceuticals) should no longer be used for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting because of an increased risk for cardiac arrhythmias, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced December 17, 2010.

New data from a manufacturer study requested by the FDA demonstrate that dolasetron injection can increase the risk for potentially fatal torsade de pointes and has been linked to a dose-dependent prolongation of the QT, PR, and QRS intervals on electrocardiogram. More information about this announcement is available on the FDA Web site.
