Anxiety Disorders Common

The anxiety disorders, as a group, are the most common, or frequently occurring, mental illness in the United States. Anxiety, which may be understood as the pathological counterpart of normal fear, is manifest by disturbances of mood, as well as of thinking, behavior and physiological activity. These disorders are serious medical illnesses that fill people's lives with overwhelming anxiety and fear. Unlike the relatively mild, brief anxiety caused by a stressful event such as a business presentation or a first date, anxiety disorders are chronic, relentless, and can grow progressively worse if not treated.

Diagnosis of Heart Failure Likely to Provoke Anxiety

Effective communication can allay anxiety. The diagnosis and prognosis of Heart Failure (HF) are likely to provoke anxiety. The anxiety may contribute to the patient's inability to comprehend or follow a treatment plan.Anxiety may be present in 50% to 70% of HF patients, particularly older adults. Disease severity and depression with or without comorbid anxiety significantly affects quality of life for HF patients. Although depression is predictive of a worse prognosis, anxiety should be taken seriously and addressed by the provider.

Athena Forum – Heart Failure Care: Module D, Case Manager's Role
Excellence in Case Mgmnt

Case Manager Roles Evolving

In hospitals all across the country, many models and roles for case managers are emerging and evolving. Some hospitals have centralized systems, where one case manager follows the patient from admission to discharge; others have task-oriented systems, with admissions' case managers, unit case managers, discharge planners, utilization review case managers, etc. Some hospitals have a full-time ED case manager. In others, any available case manager covers the ED. Larger hospitals may have 24/7 HCM coverage, a luxury smaller rural hospitals find beyond their means. Regardless of the title given to the case manager or the case manager's location in the hospital, certain activities and functions are necessary for comprehensive, accurate access to patient-centered care that won't result in denied days.

Avastin Increases Risk of Heart Failure in Breast Cancer Patients

Women with advanced breast cancer who were treated with Roche's Avastin were more likely to develop heart failure than other women, according to an analysis released by a team led by Dr. Toni Choueiri of Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston. The team analyzed data on advanced breast cancer patients from five clinical trials. They found that 1.6 percent of the women who took Avastin developed congestive heart failure compared with 0.4 percent of women who got a placebo.

in Chronic Care Management

Managing chronic illness is the key to true healthcare reform.

No matter what its appearance – diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, asthma, cancer or COPD – chronic disease is the greatest contributor to the cost of healthcare in the United States.

The Jefferson School of Population Health’s online Master of Science in Chronic Care Management (MS-CCM) stresses chronic illness prevention and wellness, integrates evidence-based guidelines, includes behavioral health concerns, and appreciates cultural and individual variation.

The program prepares leaders to critically analyze, design, implement and evaluate systems to improve chronic illness prevention and care management across various health care settings and populations
