CRC: Second Leading Cause of Cancer Death

Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of non-skin cancer in men (after prostate cancer and lung cancer) and in women (after breast cancer and lung cancer). It is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States after lung cancer. The rate of new cases and deaths resulting from this disease is decreasing. Still, over 147,000 new cases are diagnosed, and more than 57,000 people die from colorectal cancer each year.

MS: Cognitive Loss Substantial

Neuropsychological studies have provided evidence of disease-based cognitive loss in a substantial number of patients with MS, possibly as many as 50%. These cognitive deficits are often not appreciated by the physician, and sometimes go unrecognized even by the patients themselves. They can have an appreciable effect, however, on the lives of the patients and their family members.

Excellence in Case Mgmnt
Advocacy: The HCM “Juggling Act”:

Sometimes the case manager seems to perform major juggling acts to get the best quality care and necessary benefits out of the patient's available insurance dollars so that the patient does not have to pay out-of-pocket for needed services and equipment and the hospital is not left paying for anything not caught by the payer or the patient. The Standards of Practice from the case management professional associations affirm that case managers are responsible for doing their best to make sure that the juggling acts are successfully performed.

T-DM1: Promising Results with HER2-Positive Breast Cancer

Among women with metastatic, HER2-positive breast cancer, trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1)—an investigational drug that combines Herceptin® (trastuzumab) and a chemotherapy drug—resulted in better progression-free survival than standard chemotherapy and Herceptin. The results of this Phase II clinical trial were presented at the 2011 European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress. [Komen News, October 5, 2011]

Master's Degree in
Chronic Care Management

Managing chronic illness is the key to true healthcare reform.

No matter what its appearance – diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, asthma, cancer or COPD – chronic disease is the greatest contributor to the cost of healthcare in the United States.

The Jefferson School of Population Health's online Master of Science in Chronic Care Management (MS-CCM) stresses chronic illness prevention and wellness, integrates evidence-based guidelines, includes behavioral health concerns, and appreciates cultural and individual variation.

The program prepares leaders to critically analyze, design, implement and evaluate systems to improve chronic illness prevention and care management across various health care settings and populations.
