Behavioral Health:
PPD or Baby Blues?

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a type of major depression that affects about 1 in 10 new mothers within the first year after they give birth. PPD includes emotional, behavioral and physical symptoms.

PPD is a serious type of depression that is different from the 'baby blues,' which involve milder symptoms and occur in 70% to 80% of all new mothers. These 'blues' typically develop three or four days after delivery and disappear after two weeks.

CM Has Holistic View

The majority of times that CMs are involved with patients with depression are related to the medical conditions that present with mental health diagnosis or issues secondarily.

The CM is often the only health professional on the team that has a complete view of the interrelationships of the co-morbidities and the depressive disorder.

Coping with Anxiety

Methods that have been studied and proven to be effective treatments for anxiety disorder include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and medication. CBT is a focused, time-limited therapy. A large four-site study documented that the two treatments perform equally well.

CBT lacks the adverse side effects of medications but may not be readily available to patients in some areas. However, telemedicine is helping psychotherapists reach more patients.
