Disability Follows COPD

Mortality data for COPD is more reliable than morbidity. Death rates for those under age 45 are very low and then increase with age to become the fourth leading cause of death-results of the cumulative effects of cigarette smoking and other pulmonary irritants.

COPD is progressive and includes dramatic changes to both lifestyle and quality of life. The majority of COPD patients experience a significant level of disability. So much that COPD is the second leading cause of disability in the United States.

COPD, Anxiety and Depression

Many persons dealing with chronic illness will also have the additional burden of dealing with depression (common with COPD).

Brief follow calls by the CM, Disease Manager (DM) or PCP can actually decrease the signs and symptoms of depression. However, some patients may need referral for additional evaluation and treatment of depression.

COPD patients experiencing increasing episodes of dyspnea will frequently demonstrate signs of anxiety. Studies are indicating the presence of anxiety may be an indicator of breathlessness.

  Improving Patient Care...

Change COPD, Treat Early

Early diagnosis of COPD and treatment initiation is of major importance in delaying permanent impairment to the lungs. As a chronic condition, COPD results in progressive changes to the respiratory system. However, with treatment initiated early the course of the disease can be changed.
