CRC: Clearly Defined Risk Factors

Colorectal cancer is one of the cancers that appear to have several clearly defined risk factors that can be used to identify people at risk for developing the disease.

Generally, more than 90% of cases occur in persons aged 50 years or older. The average age at diagnosis is in the mid-60s.

Improved CRC Diagnosis

Combining CT with PET scanning may provide a more complete picture of a tumor's location and growth or spread than either test alone.

Researchers hope that the combined procedure will improve health care professionals' ability to diagnose cancer, determine how far it has spread, and follow patients' responses to treatment.

The combined PET/CT scan may also reduce the number of additional imaging tests and other procedures a patient needs.

CRC Goal: Optimize QOL

At any stage of colorectal cancer, treatments are available to control pain and other symptoms, to relieve the side effects of therapy, and to ease emotional and practical problems. This kind of treatment is called supportive care, symptom management, or palliative care.

Rehabilitation is also an important part of cancer care. The healthcare team makes every effort to help the patient return to normal activities as soon as possible. The goal of rehabilitation is to optimize the quality of life (QOL).
