Assessing Obesity

Excess abdominal fat is an important, independent risk factor for disease. Research has shown that waist circumference is directly associated with abdominal fat and can be used in the assessment of the risks associated with obesity.

Women with a waist measurement of more than 35 inches and men with a waist measurement of more than 40 inches may have more health risks than people with lower waist measurements because of their body fat distribution.

For individual patients, BMI and waist measurements in conjunction with personal risk factors including high blood pressure, cholesterol levels and family history of heart disease are adequate indicators of the need to embark on a weight loss program.

Case managers trying to influence dietary change must take into account a patient’s:

  • Personal food preferences
  • Level of awareness and interest in making healthier choices
  • Cultural differences
  • Availability of healthy food
  • Affordability of healthy food

The CDC has compiled science-based tools and professional resources.

  Improving Patient Care...  

Nutrient Dense or Empty Calorie

Whole, unprocessed foods are usually nutrient dense.  

Nutrient-dense food is the opposite of empty-calorie food. Sweets and soft drinks are very high in calories because of added sugars, while their nutrient density is very low. Such energy-dense food is not beneficial to health.
