BH: Treating Anxiety Disorders

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, research has demonstrated that both 'behavioral therapy' and 'cognitive therapy' can be highly effective in treating anxiety disorders.

Behavioral therapy involves using techniques to reduce or stop the undesired behavior associated with these disorders. For example, one approach involves training patients in relaxation and deep breathing techniques to counteract the agitation and hyperventilation (rapid, shallow breathing) that accompany certain anxiety disorders.

BH: CM Role in Managing SA Issues

Case Manager Referrals for patients with substance abuse may occur:

  • Direct per a recent admission or Emergency Room encounter with specific Behavior Health diagnosis
  • Indirect per Medical conditions that may be associated with substance abuse

The CM's role will need to include all of the essential functions: assessment; planning; facilitation and advocacy.

Patients referred to Case Management services with issues of Substance Abuse may present with multiple issues requiring much coordination, facilitation and advocacy.

  Improving Patient Care...

BH: Patients as Peer-Specialists

In a controlled study, patients served by case management teams, along with patients as peer- specialists, displayed greater gains in several areas of quality of life and greater reductions in major life problems, as compared with two comparison groups of patients served by case management teams without peer-specialists.

One clinical trial compared case management teams staffed by patients versus teams staffed by non-patients. The study found that patients improved equally well with patient and non-patient case managers.
