Pain Management: What to Use?

For members of the health care team seeking to provide optimal pain relief for patients, the best choice is to use the standard or guideline with the highest level of support. For example:

  • Hospitalized patient – Use Joint Commission standards
  • Management of a specific type of pain such as sickle cell – Use a guideline
  • Working with addictive patient – A position statement such as ASPMN would be helpful

Pain Management: Cancer Pain Under-treated

Pain is one of the most feared and burdensome aspects of cancer. Cancer pain, however, can be managed effectively through relatively simple means in up to 90% of the eight million Americans who have cancer or a history of cancer.

Yet, in a 2008 review of published literature the proportion of cancer patients whose pain was undertreated was almost half of all the patients considered.

Breast Cancer Research: Targeted Therapies

Breast cancer treatment is no longer "One-Size fits all". Research into targeted therapies is resulting in a newer group of drugs that take advantage of gene changes in cells that cause cancer.

Studies are underway to:

  • See how best to use drugs approved to target excess HER2 protein
  • Use a vaccine to target the HER2 protein
  • Stop new blood vessels from forming in metastatic breast tumors
  • Help hormone therapy drugs work better [ACS website, Retrieved 10.3.12; click here.
