CV Risk: Thrombus Formation

Endothelial cells produce compounds that have two actions: (1) dilate the lumen of blood vessels and (2) inhibit adhesion and aggregation of platelets inside the blood vessel. The goal is to avoid blockage of blood vessels.

Thrombus formation results from coagulation of the blood. It can cause partial or complete interruption in blood flow.

A thrombus that travels from the heart to another location is called an embolus. Sometimes, atherosclerotic plaque, pieces of tumor, fat, air, amniotic fluid, or other materials can act as an embolus.

CV Risk: Psychosocial Care

It is expected that patients will experience some level of anxiety and/or depression following a heart attack. This may be seen immediately or after a period of time. Delays may be due to the amount of treatment and therapies that are initiated following an acute admission or following a cardiac surgery. Ongoing assessment will need to include Quality of Life assessment tools and possibly the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Many of the Cardiac Centers offer support groups. Mended Hearts is a non-profit American Heart Association organization providing educational support and resource information.
