GI Disorders: UC Presentation

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders. UC typically presents with:

  • Rectal bleeding (virtually 100% of the time)
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation can occur if inflammation is limited to rectum
  • Fever and chills in more severe UC cases

UC: Remission is the Goal

Case managers recognize that management supports the primary goal of UC treatment which is the achievement and maintenance of clinical and endoscopic remission.

With proper treatment, about 50% of patients remain in remission for periods of months to years and can lead normal, healthy lives.

UC: Tips for Case Managers

  1. Some people with UC eventually will require surgery - to control their disease or to address various complications.
  2. Surgery for UC can result in a healthier, more active lifestyle.
  3. UC surgery to remove diseased intestinal tissue represents a "cure," and thereby vastly improving the quality of life.
  4. Surgery may reduce or eliminate the need for ongoing use of medication.
  5. Case Managers can engage patients to be active partners in the treatment of their UC by discussing in detail the medical and surgical options available.
