Women's Health: Initiating Sexual History Conversation

Less than 15% of women broach the subject spontaneously, whereas 55% are willing to discuss sexual issues if asked.

Women are more likely to discuss sexual history if:

  • Healthcare provider is openly concerned about sexual wellness
  • Healthcare provider is at ease discussing sexual issues
  • Healthcare provider is generally kind and understanding
  • Healthcare provider is always professional
  • Patient has seen the healthcare provider previously
  • Patient has a sense for the healthcare provider's personal attributes

Women's Health: Wellness Brings Return on Investment

Women face increasing risks of heart disease as they age. Lifestyle adjustments are the single most important prevention method for heart disease.

Along with smoking cessation, women should be continuously educated about the benefits of an exercise program and weight management. Case Managers can examine patient's plan benefits to determine if there is support for health lifestyles. Insurance providers and employers are recognizing that wellness can bring a return on investment.

Women's Health: HRT Is Not Risk Preventative

Women prior to the age of menopause have a low risk for stroke, and hormonal therapy at one time was considered to reduce the risk that comes with aging. However, multiple studies have shown varied results. In several of the studies the concluding issue was not estrogen alone being used (as for women with hysterectomies) or estrogen in combination with progesterone. The conclusions were that hormone therapy cannot be used as a risk prevention for strokes. Estrogen may, in fact, be the concern.
