COPD: Exacerbation Management

The risk of dying from an exacerbation of COPD is closely related to the:

  • Development of respiratory acidosis
  • Presence of significant co-morbidities
  • Need for ventilator support

A range of criteria need to be considered in making the decision regarding hospitalization and possible admission to the ICU. Admission of patients with a severe exacerbation of COPD to an intermediate or special respiratory care unit may be appropriate if personnel, skills and equipment exist to identify and manage acute respiratory failure.

COPD: Culturally Sensitive Care

For many individuals, effective communication can be inhibited by:

  • Language
  • Culture
  • Hearing or visual impairment
  • Health literacy
  • Cognitive impairments
  • Disease or disability

Many patients, particularly the elderly may have one or more of these issues. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has developed national standards for providing appropriate cultural and linguistic services.

COPD: Patient Awareness Programs

If the burden of COPD is to be reduced, it is essential among primary care physicians and their patients to improve awareness and raise the profiles of the disease. Thus, extensive educational and awareness programs are required to engage patients in risk factor reduction.

CMs should avoid passing along information in a routine workman like fashion. It is important to take time to discuss the patient's feelings and worries especially with newly diagnosed patients.

COPD patient education should balance patient information needs with the need for emotional support.
