Diabetes: Physical Activity
Reduces Risk by 71%

The Diabetes Presentation Program, a large, multi-center clinical trial confirmed that lifestyle interventions, including physical activity, reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes across all participating ethnic groups for both men and women.

Lifestyle changes worked best for those 60 years and older, reducing this group's risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 71%.

Diabetes: Costs U.S. $174 billion

Considered to be at epidemic levels, diabetes increased steadily in the last half of the 20th century and will continue to rise with the aging U.S. population, growth in minority populations susceptible to T2DM and rising obesity among Americans.

Diabetes costs total approximately $174 billion: $116 billion in direct costs, $58 billion in indirect costs. People with diabetes (PWD) have medical expenses 2.3 times higher than what expenditures would be in the absence of diabetes. These costs will continue to escalate as the rate of diabetes exponentially increases.

  Improving Patient Care...

Diabetes: PWD Sensitivity

Current diabetes clinical practice has integrated the use of the term "person(s) with diabetes" (PWD) to refer to patients. Referring to people as "diabetics," or "ics" for short, has a negative connotation and literally calls the person the disease, thus placing the person in a sick role and disempowering their role in self-management.

Clinicians are encouraged to approach diabetes care from an individual, culturally sensitive, and patient empowerment base promoting self-care management and improved health outcomes.
