UC: Importance of Remission

The primary goal of Ulcerative Colitis (UC) treatment is the achievement and maintenance of clinical and endoscopic remission. Case managers recognize that UC management supports the primary goal.

Measurement of remission must account for the:

  • Ability of the mucosa to heal
  • Variability of normal bowel patterns
  • Associated UC symptoms

UC: Benefits of Proactive CM

Over two-thirds of UC patients experience at lease one relapse within ten elapsed years.

Recent evidence supports the suggestion that there is a link between increased inflammation and the risk of colorectal cancer. This underscores the importance of preventing relapses.

Proactive and long-term case management is an essential element of achieving the goal of remission, but the benefits are tangible.

UC: Adherence to MM is Vital

Medications are the first line of UC treatment. At the present time, there are seven basic categories of medications used:

  • 5-aminosalicylates
  • Steroids/Corticosteroids
  • Immunomodulators/Immunosuppressants
  • Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha
    (TNFα) Therapy
  • Antibiotics and Antispasmodics
  • Nicotine patches

Adherence to medication management (MM) is vital for both induction and maintenance of remission.
