Patient Advocacy:
EBM = Quality

"Evidence based medicine" (EBM) recognizes that many aspects of medical care depend on individual factors such as quality and value-of-life judgments, which are only partially subject to scientific methods. EBM, however, seeks to clarify those parts of medical practice that are, in principle, subject to scientific methods and to apply these methods to ensure the best prediction of outcomes in medical treatment, even as debate about which outcomes are desirable continues.

EBM aims for the ideal that healthcare professionals should make "conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence" in their everyday practice.

Patient Advocacy:
Are All the 'Rights' Right?

To ensure the provision of "right care", the case manager (CM) serves as the single common point of contact between the care team, the hospital staff, and the patient. The CM is the critical bridge that is necessary to confirm that all the "rights" really are "right".

HCMs should be ever vigilant in orchestrating the refining and fine tuning of Right Care practices.

  Improving Patient Care...

Patient Advocacy:
Physician Practice Profiling

Physician practice profiling examines the way physicians practice medicine and at their practice decisions not their clinical judgment. Many physicians practice medicine the way they were taught, regardless of whether or not that practice is evidence based. Practice behaviors rooted in habit rather than evidence:

  • add clinical risk
  • jeopardize outcomes
  • add costs

The only way to reduce risk and expenses is to improve use of resources by changing the way physicians practice medicine. Other strategies to reduce costs have not been effective.
