Diabetes: Achieving Glycemic Control

Given the results of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), there is broad consensus on the health benefits of normal or near-normal blood glucose levels and on the importance, especially in insulin-treated patients, of self-monitored blood glucose (SMBG) in treatment efforts designed to achieve such glycemic goals.

Patients should be taught how to use the data to adjust medical nutrition therapy (MNT), exercise, or pharmacological therapy to achieve specific glycemic goals.

Health professionals should regularly evaluate the patient's ability to use SMBG data.

Diabetes: Threats to Glycemic Control

Certain drug side effects have an impact on diabetes self-management. Patients are taught to be attentive to particular signs and symptoms that may indicate impending hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.

Certain procedures and aspects of diabetes care require the patient to be alert, coordinated, and capable of making self-management decisions. A drug that mimics a person's usual warning signs of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, or one that impairs a patient's ability to perform necessary self-care tasks, may adversely affect glycemic control.
