Announcing Asthma 2.0

The Athena Forum Asthma Course has been updated and is now available. Asthma 2.0 describes current Asthma topics and care concepts including pathophysiology, assessment, management, treatments and interventions.

With more than 8 percent of the U.S. population suffering from asthma, the disorder imposes a substantial burden on individuals, the healthcare system and society.

Although effective therapies to manage asthma are available, it is often poorly controlled.

Case Managers play a crucial role in bridging care gaps, addressing patient barriers and improving patients' quality of life through better asthma management.

Asthma 2.0: The Burden of Uncontrolled Asthma

Uncontrolled asthma leads to unscheduled physician visits and avoidable emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations, and absences from work and school, as well as significantly increased healthcare costs. By improving asthma control in the asthma patient population, CMs can help reduce this tremendous burden.

Good asthma management is important not just for patients and their families, but for the healthcare system and society.

Asthma 2.0: Therapy Goals

The goals of asthma therapy as outlined by the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) include prevention of symptoms, infrequent use of quick-relief medication, and maintenance of normal activity levels.

These goals are grouped under two dimensions of health status:

  • reducing impairment
  • reducing risk
Impairment refers to current impairment (frequency and intensity of symptoms, activity limitation, etc.) and risk refers to the risk for future exacerbations. In managing asthma, the aim is to improve both dimensions of health status.
