Announcing New Course:
Depression 2.0

Athena forum is please to announce a new course on Depression. This series covers:

  • Prevalence and Impact
  • Pathophysiology
  • Non-Pharmacological Treatment
  • Pharmacological Treatment
  • CM Role in Depression

The burden of mental illness on health and productivity in the US and worldwide has long been underestimated. Depression alone is estimated to affect 350 million people.

Case managers, often on the "front lines" when working with patients, can play a pivotal role in the identification of patients suffering with depression and guide treatment for these patients, lessening the burden on both the patient and society.

Depression 2.0: You Can Help Decrease the Stigma of Mental Illness

Over two-thirds of the individuals with depressive disorders are unaware that depression is a treatable illness. This leads to a failure to seek professional help.

There is also persistent ignorance and numerous misperceptions about depression on the part of the public. This leads to painful stigmatization and avoidance.

Future CM interventions should promote contact with people with depression and place special emphasis on conveying accurate information about treatment.

  Improving Patient Care...

Depression: Pills Are No
"Magic Bullet"

The depressed individual is not reducible to a biochemically deficient entity. Each individual is embedded in a complex social environment. Treating patients beyond the "magic bullet" of medication in ways that also address the patient's physical and emotional world is likely to be most effective, although it may add to the cost of treatment. "Talk therapy" and medication seem to produce the best outcomes.

The CM supports and fosters team efforts with patient education, patient follow-up to track outcomes and adherence to treatment.
