Behavioral Health: Anxiety 101

Anxiety, which may be understood as the pathological counterpart of normal fear, is manifest by disturbances of mood, as well as of thinking, behavior, and physiological activity.

Effective treatments for anxiety disorders are available, and research is yielding new, improved therapies that can help most people with these disorders lead productive, fulfilling lives.

Each anxiety disorder has its own distinct features, but they are all bound together by the common theme of excessive, irrational fear and dread.

Behavioral Health: Therapy Limits

Anxiety disorders are responsive to counseling and to a wide variety of psychotherapies. More severe and persistent symptoms may also require pharmacotherapy.

A major limitation of cognitive-behavioral therapies is not their effectiveness but, rather, the limited availability of skilled practitioners.

Without skilled therapeutic assistance, sufferers typically continue to withdraw from anxiety-inducing situations, inadvertently reinforcing avoidant behaviors.

Behavioral Health: Therapy Successes

During the past several decades, there has been increasing enthusiasm for more focused, time-limited therapies that address ways of coping with anxiety symptoms. These therapies typically emphasize cognitive and behavioral interventions.

The hallmarks of cognitive-behavioral therapies are:

  • Evaluating apparent cause and effect relationships
  • Implementing straightforward strategies to lessen symptoms
  • Reduce avoidant behavior
A critical element of therapy is to increase exposure to the stimuli or situations that provoke anxiety.
