Ethics in CM: Five Basic Principles

Case managers should behave and practice ethically, adhering to the tenets of the code of ethics that underlies his/her professional credential such as nursing, social work and rehabilitation counseling.

This is demonstrated by awareness and application of the five basic ethical principles:

  • Beneficence - to do good
  • Nonmalfeasance - to do no harm
  • Autonomy - to respect the individuals' rights to make their own decisions
  • Justice - to treat others fairly
  • Fidelity - to follow-through and to keep promises

Ethics in CM: Applying
Ethical Principles

Applied ethics involves examining specific controversial issues such as abortion. It is an applied ethical topic since it involves a specific type of controversial behavior. Yet it also depends on more general normative principles, such as the right of self-rule and the right to life, which are litmus tests for determining the morality of abortion.

The issue also involves meta-ethical issues such as:

  • Where do rights come from?
  • What kind of "beings" has rights?

Ethics in CM: Right vs. Wrong

Bioethics is a field of study concerned with the philosophical implications of certain biological and medical procedures, technologies, and treatments such as organ transplants, genetic engineering, and care of the terminally ill.

"People often say there is no "right answer" in moral disputes. They are wrong. The right answer in moral disputes is the one we make up, test, and see if it works. In other words, does it ultimately provide us with more of the kind of benefits we want?"
