Colorectal Cancer (CRC): Is Every Polyp Cancer?

Polyps are growths that protrude from the inner wall of the colon or rectum. They are relatively common in people over age 50. Most polyps are benign (noncancerous); however, experts believe that most colorectal cancers (CRCs) develop in polyps called adenomas. Colorectal tumors present with a broad spectrum of neoplasms, ranging from benign growths to invasive cancer, and are predominantly epithelial-derived tumors (i.e., adenomas or adenocarcinomas). Pathologists have classified the lesions into 3 groups: non-neoplastic polyps, neoplastic polyps (adenomatous polyps, adenomas), and cancers. Benign tumors are not cancer

CRC: Survivable?

CRC survival rates differ significantly when they are presented within the context of stage at diagnosis.

  • When disease is diagnosed in early stages (e.g., localized), 5-year survival increases to 90.4%; but, only 39% of patients are diagnosed with early-stage disease.
  • If there is regional spread to lymph nodes and adjacent organs, 5-year survival drops to 67%.
  • When diagnosed in late stage (e.g., distant metastasis), 5-year survival is only 9% to 10%. Racial disparity between Whites and African Americans still exists; African American 5-year survival is 10% lower than that for whites (55% vs. 65%).
