Suicide Prevention: Education and Awareness Is Key

People may consider suicide when they are:

  • Overwhelmed by feelings of hopelessness
  • Cannot see any other solution to their problems

Those who have the highest risk of completing a suicide are white men. But women and teens report more suicide attempts.

Education and awareness are the best keys to continuing the important job of reducing the impact of suicide in our society. Suicide is not just a mental health problem; it is truly a concern for the entire community.

Suicide Prevention: Complex Factors and Influences

While its causes are complex and determined by multiple factors, the goals of suicide prevention are straight forward:

  • Reduce factors that increase risk
  • Increase protective factors that promote resilience
Ideally, prevention addresses levels of influence, including the individual, relationship issues, plus community and societal influences.
