Ebola: Viral Etiology

Ebola includes infection associated with three genera:

  • Ebola viruses
  • Cueva virus
  • Marburg viruses

These all belong to the family Filoviridae, a virus of the family Filoviridae, genus Ebolavirus. The Filoviridae name is derived from the filament-like appearance of the viral particle under electron microscopy.

Ebola: Dangers of Bush Meat

The term "bush meat" refers to meat that comes from wild animals (cane rats, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelopes, porcupines and snakes) captured in developing regions of the world such as Africa. Bush meat covers any animal that is killed for consumption.

Typically, outbreaks have been sparked when bush meat or wildlife hunters contract the illness from an intermediary host and return to their local villages.

Ebola is introduced into the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals consumed as bush meat.

Ebola: System Strained by

There will be members of the general public, referred to as the worried-well, who will present for assessment after hearing about novel communicable diseases, such as Ebola.

The worried-well has the potential to place additional stress on the capacity of the health care system in general and especially on specific hospital departments including:

  • Case management
  • Emergency services

There is a need to inform while being prepared for the consequences of increased public concern, anxiety and attention.
