  Clinical Accuracy Spoken Here

Ebola: Highly Infectious,
Less Contagious

Ebola is highly infectious, because an infinitesimally small amount can cause illness.

The most contagious diseases are those that spread through airborne virus particles such as:

  • Measles
  • Influenza
At the current time, Ebola is considered highly infectious but only mildly contagious because the virus is not transmitted through the air.

Ebola: Public Health in Action

The U.S. has a robust public health system. Even if more Ebola-infected people come here, the virus can be contained.

Everyone who came in contact with Thomas Duncan, the first case of and person to die from Ebola in this country was:

  • Tracked down
  • Monitored for 21 days which is the maximum incubation period for the virus

All of them have now been cleared of risk.

Duncan did infect two other people. So everyone they had contact with was also traced and those people were monitored for 21 days as well.

  Improving Patient Care...

Ebola: Three Tiered Health
Care Delivery

"Every emergency department must be prepared to handle the initial management of an Ebola patient, beginning with their identification through travel history and their isolation. ...some hospitals may feel that the resources required for an Ebola patient outstrip their abilities, and they may elect to transfer to a... biocontainment facility such as those... at Emory, Nebraska and NIH.

"We should seriously consider designating certain medical centers as our primary response centers for [Ebola] cases that are treated in the U.S. Such is the model employed for many diseases including trauma, burns and strokes."
