Depression 2.0: DALYs

The Global Burden of Disease study developed a single measure called Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) to allow comparison of the burden of disease across many different disease conditions by including both death and disability. It measures lost years of healthy life regardless of whether the years were lost to premature death or disability. Disability is weighted for severity.

Major depression is the leading cause of disability (measured by DALYs) worldwide among persons age five and older. For women depression is the leading cause of DALYs worldwide.

Depression 2.0: Goals and Rewards

The goal of the ongoing action plan is to provide comprehensive and easily accessible services at the community level to achieve long-term home care as an alternative to inpatient care.

A formal program that meets these requirements may not be available in all cases. Individualizing care for such resource intensive patients achieves:

  • Improved quality of life for patients who would prefer not to be hospitalized
  • Higher levels of patient satisfaction

It is also professionally satisfying and economically rewarding.

Depression 2.0: Enhancing Motivation

Motivational interviewing techniques provide tools to support CM efforts to accomplish clear communication, identifying readiness for change and enhancing motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence.

The "spirit" of MI is a term frequently used in describing its attributes and may be thought of as its foundation. The overall "spirit" has been described as:

  • Collaborative
  • Evocative
  • Honoring of patient autonomy
