What's NEW at Athena Forum

Strategic Priority: Resource Management

Hospital administrators are focusing more closely than they have in the past on improving efficiency through increased productivity and by making effective financial management a strategic priority, according to a recent article in Hospitals & Health Networks.

Reduced payment from Medicare and new reimbursement methods such as bundled payments and capitation require administrators to focus on managing all resources efficiently across the entire spectrum of care, the article said.

CM Express: Finite Resources, Infinite Demands

The gross domestic product (GDP) is everything produced by all companies in the United States (U.S.). Nearly half of GDP is services and health care is the largest service industry in the U.S.

National health spending has outpaced growth in the overall economy for at least 60 years. In1950 health care spending was 4.4% of the GDP, rising to 17.9% by 2011.

Look at what costs would be if other goods had risen in proportion to HC:

  • One dozen eggs - $55
  • One dozen oranges - $134
  • One gallon of milk - $45

Projections suggest that U.S. HC spending will exceed 20% of the GDP by 2019.

CM Express: Issues of Quality, Value, Necessity

CMs perform a vital role as facilitators of treatment in a health care system where patients have complex medical conditions and are seen by multiple physicians.

It is incumbent upon CMs to raise issues including whether a certain aspect of care is duplicative or unnecessary, in an environment where quality and value must be accounted for.

The ultimate objective is to:

  • Keep people healthy
  • Prevent the chronic illnesses that consume health care dollars
  • Use medical interventions appropriately and only when needed
  • Create an economically sustainable approach to HC delivery

CMs are integral to the accomplishment of these goals, one patient at a time.
