Depression: Majority Prefer Psychotherapy

A November 2009 survey showed that 71% of adults in the survey had used psychotherapy or counseling at some point but only 29% were currently using it and only 16% considered psychotherapy as their primary treatment.

This seems at odds with studies conducted among primary care patients who experience depression, where the majority stated that they would prefer psychotherapy over antidepressant medications.

These findings suggest that there are barriers to accessing psychotherapy. This raises the questions of the:

  • Availability of qualified therapists
  • Physical ability to follow through with appointments
  • Financial issues

Depression: CMs Can Mitigate Barriers

Various ways to mitigate barriers to psychotherapy have shown some success including telephone-administered cognitive behavioral therapy.

More recent studies continue to validate the efficacy of psychotherapy versus pharmacotherapy in achieving benefits for depressed patients.

CMs play a pivotal role in continuing patient education about available options and in assisting patients with referrals and community-based options to access a variety of treatment modalities.
