Social Workers Hired by Insurance Companies
An article ran recently on NPR about some major insurance companies hiring social workers to help opioid addicts stay out of the ER.
For many people struggling with opioid use, a key to success in recovery is having support. Some are getting that support from an unlikely place: their health insurer.
Insurers in Massachusetts typically cover some inpatient substance use treatment and detox, but those are only short-term solutions. After a patient is discharged, relapse -- and readmission -- is likely without follow-up support.
That's why Massachusetts insurers assign social workers to some of the people they insure.

Social Workers Improve Support Systems
Social work CMs face both opportunities and challenges. With its strength-based, person-in-environment perspectives that enhance the well-being of individuals, families and communities, the social work profession is well trained to develop and improve support systems including:
- Service delivery systems
- Naturally occurring social supports
Furthermore, social workers have long recognized that the therapeutic relationship between the practitioner and the client plays an integral role in case management.
This expertise positions the social worker profession as a leader within the field of case management.

Importance of Case Management in Successful
Domestic Abuse Interventions
"Of all the competencies possessed by CMs, the ability to keenly assess plus listen to one's clinical gut is among those most valuable in effectively intervening with patients experiencing domestic abuse."
