Tips from our featured course

Economic and Financial Challenges in Healthcare

In today's environment providers of care are being buffeted by significant economic and financial challenges, making a high-performance revenue cycle vital. Ensuring payment of every dollar that is appropriately due to an organization is critical to supporting the core mission of healthcare delivery.

Revenue Cycle Challenge - Filling Beds
versus Preventing Illness

"We are in a transition phase in healthcare. Although CMS reached its goal of having 30% of Medicare payments tied to quality in 2016, the actual amount of those payments represents a small percentage of hospital revenue. Hospitals are therefore torn between filling beds which improves revenue and preventing illness to improve the overall health of the population but decreasing revenue.

A readmission that is prevented means one less DRG payment. On the other hand, decreasing utilization of costly hospital services by the under- or uninsured by utilization of prevention strategies helps patients by preventing illness and helps hospitals by reducing unreimbursed care. How to balance these competing forces will be a task for healthcare leaders for years to come."
