Athena Forum's Ellen Fink-Samnick Wins
CMSA National Award of Service Excellence (AOSE)

Ellen Fink-Samnick, the 2016 recipient of the CMSA National Award of Service Excellence (AOSE) is the Director of Social Work Education for Athena Forum. She has served in that capacity since 2011. The AOSE national award is given to a practicing case manager who exemplifies the essence of CM -- innovation, creativity, collaboration, and resourcefulness.

Ellen Fink-Samnick is Course Director for courses in the current Athena Forum curriculum for Case Managers, including Ethics in Case Management, Establishing Professional Identity, Depression and Harm Risk Behavior. In addition, she is a planning committee member and faculty on numerous courses such as Hospital Revenue Cycle, CM Express, Heart Failure and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. Ellen serves as the NASW and CCMC Practice Standards expert for case studies in the Athena Forum curriculum.

Tips from our featured course

Depression and Understanding Changes to DSM-5

The DSM system is a standardized classification system for mental disorders. DSM-5 essentially eliminates the distinction between medical conditions and mental health disorders and, making this point even clearer, the phrase "general medical condition" has been changed to "another medical condition" in the DSM-5. Caution associated with the new non-multi-axial DSM-5 system is that, while contexts are no longer specifically prompted in making diagnoses, social and cultural information continues to be extremely important to treatment considerations.

In the next weeks we will highlight the changes in the DSM-5 associated most closely with depression and related disorders.

Bipolar Disorders

Criterion A for manic and hypomanic episodes now includes an emphasis on changes in activity and energy as well as mood. A new specifier, "with mixed features," has been added.

  • Other Specified Bipolar and Related Disorder
  • The Anxious Distress Specifier

DSM-5 allows the specification of particular conditions who meet all criteria for hypomania except the duration criterion.

The Anxious Distress specifier identifies patients with anxiety symptoms that are not part of the bipolar diagnostic criteria.
