Breast Cancer Myths

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Here are a few myths, according to the National Cancer Institute:

Finding a lump means you have breast cancer.

Only a small percentage of lumps turn out to be cancer.

A mammogram can cause breast cancer to spread.

The risk of harm from this radiation exposure is extremely low.

A family history of breast cancer means you will develop breast cancer.

Most women who have breast cancer have no family history.

Gene mutation BRCA1 or BRCA2 in your DNA means you will develop breast cancer.

Not every woman in such families carries a harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, and not every cancer in such families is linked to a harmful mutation in one of these genes.
