Tips from our featured course

CM Express: Can You Communicate Under Pressure?

Communication is recognized as one of the central factors underpinning safe, high-quality teamwork in complex systems such as healthcare. Without effective communication, competent individuals form an incompetent team.

Healthcare, traditionally predicated on the excellence and autonomy of the individual practitioner, has been somewhat slow to embrace this reality. It is only recently that it has been recognized that both technical and communicative expertise are necessary for safe care.

The ability to communicate is one of the most basic elements of human interactions. Effective communication is not merely the transaction of words, but rather an interaction which requires an:

  • Understanding of the underlying context of the situation
  • Appreciation for the tone and emotions of a conversation
  • Active listening and objective interpretation of what is being said
  • Provision of accurate information

Effective communication, which is expedited through the use of critical conversations, is essential for the achievement of optimal patient-centered care.

CM Express: Level the Field
When Interacting With Physicians

"Doctors love to learn but hate to be taught. Presenting the question in a non-threatening way will result in a more collegial interaction.

"Don't apologize for calling; if you really were sorry you called, you probably shouldn't have called in the first place."
