Tips from our featured course

Asthma 2017: Case Management Extends Across the Continuum of Care

"There is no longer a beginning and an end to a healthcare encounter. The new paradigm of population health which encompasses the promotion of good health and the prevention of illness can include an episode of care in the hospital, another healthcare facility, at the doctor's office or in the home and then works to prevent future occurrences.

"The complexity of our healthcare system is such that these many steps require a competent case manager to guide patients through these multiple stages across the continuum of care."

Targeted Medications: New Asthma Therapies

New targeted medications that have therapeutic responses correlated with specific biomarkers have been developed; for example, sputum or blood eosinophil count with anti-IL-5 therapy and serum periostin is correlated with anti-IL-13 therapy. These drugs hold great promise but will likely be expensive alternatives to traditional asthma therapy.

In the future, it will be important to develop strategies to prevent asthma and, in children with the disease, to maximize the appropriate use of and adherence to the available medications before considering more expensive alternatives.

CMs can have a positive impact on these goals by engaging patients and families in educational mediums, supporting them through follow up and connecting them with resources to support their self-management.
